Irrigation System “Paljurci”, Southern Vardar Valley, Gevgelija, R. Macedonia

Client: Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management

Design Period: 2005

Technical  Assistance to the Main Contractor: GIM – Civil Engineering Institute of Macedonia

Preparation of the Preliminary and Main Design for hydro melioration systems for irrigation with associate objects for the Southern Vardar valley “Paljurci” – Gevgelija.

Project activities performed:

-         Topography

-         Collection and analysis of data

-         Reporting and data submission

-         Layout of the irrigation network

-         Analyses of the possible water sources for irrigation, based on the existing

-         hydrological and hydrogeological data for possible water source locations

-         Hydraulic calculations for the systems under pressure

-         Optimisation of the number of the working pumps

-         Irrigation methods

The area covered with irrigation system  “Paljurci” (existing 900 ha and new 966.61 ha covered with the Main Project) are mainly placed south, and southwest from Bogdanci on the left side of the river Vardar, in the places of Bogdanci and villages Gavato, Stojakovo and Bogorodica.Some of the existing surfaces (16 ha) are placed downstream from the dam Paljurci through the flow of the river Luda Mara by its left and right side.

Technical solution for irrigation of the total areas covered with the Main Design is consisting from the following objects:

- Intake on suction basin from pumping station (on level 123 m.n.v.) on the existing pipeline from PSDL;

 -Main supply from intake to the system network, main distribution chamber (node 1 on network) located southwest from Bogdanci on the r. Luda Mara left side.

-Distribution chamber in node 1 on network mentioned above;

-Distribution chamber on node 14 on RC1 by which is distributing water for

 100ha uncover areas with the system;

-Crossing of the Main pipeline and RC2 (returned) through river Luda Mara;

-Irrigation network for total areas covered with

Main Design which is consist of:

  • Two distribution pipelines RC1 and RC2 and
  • Section pipelines DC covered with both distribution pipelines mention above.

Having in mind that water for irrigation is scarcity resource, concept of this Program is base on investment in water saving. In this case in stead of existing systems and surface irrigation with the program is proposing systems to be rebuilt – open channels to be changed with pipelines, in fact systems to be changed from open to close.
